The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), with major advocacy from the Jamaica Bay Eco-Watchers group, is hoping to make Jamaica Bay a "no discharge zone" in the near future. In order to do so, DEP will place three waste dumping stations around Jamaica Bay by next spring to encourage people to not dump waste into the delicate waters of Jamaica Bay, but rather pump it from their boats. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot mandate an area a "no discharge zone" without having this and other proper alternatives available to boaters. Workers and DEP officials are pictured testing the system this week near Beach 100 Street. 036p1_xlg.jpg
