You Get What You Pay For

Up until June 1, 2012, it cost just 35 cents to purchase the weekly edition of The Wave. On that date, the front page indicated that it would now cost 50 cents a week to purchase our paper. Five years later, it still costs about the price of a single stamp a week.

Recently, The Wave’s Managing Editor Mark Healey asked a question on his Facebook page: “How many people who complain about ‘fake news’ subscribe to their local paper?”

There were many comments, but one that stood out was one that stated that 50 cents a week was “too much,” and that “Community newspapers should be free and funded by grants.”

Well, being funded by government grants isn’t a business model for a free and independent media organization. The Wave has always been supported by Rockaway businesses with advertising revenue, and by the community, by way of subscriptions or single issue sales.

We value the work of our team, we value the efforts of our advertisers, many of whom have dealt with the aftermath of Sandy as much – if not more – as our readers.

Each week, our editorial staff, art department and sales team collaborate to produce an award-winning newspaper that has been serving its community for nearly 125 years. The names have changed over the years, but the mission remains the same: provide the most comprehensive coverage of Rockaway that we can. Given the fact that many of the city’s tabloids have closed their neighborhood bureaus, important stories in Rockaway aren’t going to be reported anywhere else.

The responsibility of community newspapers to hold public officials and government agencies accountable for their actions – or lack thereof – has never been greater.

Thank you for helping us do our jobs.
