An Intern’s Take

By Ilyassha Shivers

Once upon a time in Far Rockaway…

If you are like me, you are fed up with the current state of our socalled community. The reason I say so-called is because the most important part of the word, “UNITY,” does not exist. You see there are those who work to create this climate. There are those who thrive in the midst of chaos. I was at an event recently, where a dear sister of mine spoke about legacy. She also spoke about numbers.

In a community where there are almost 20,000 Democratic registered voters, how is a city council election won by only 5,000 or more votes. My friends, something is wrong.

It is time now, more than ever, that we wake up, know, understand and take part in the political process. I have realized that in life you must continue to be a student. You must seek knowledge and understanding on regular basis. When you think you know everything you are a fool. The legend Bob Marley said it best: “In the midst of water, a fool is thirsty.”

That being said, the recent closing of the Redfern community center is unacceptable. The facts are still coming in. But the bottom line is that the residents of The Redfern Houses deserve better.

What do you think? Thank you for your time, and enjoy The Wave!
