SBS Vote Postponed Until 2017

Despite a recent committee decision, opposing plans for Select Bus Service along the Q52/Q53 bus route, members of Community Board 14 have postponed its decision until January 2017, when a joint meeting will be held with representatives of New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA).

“We fully feel the extension of the Q52 would be positive step,” said CB14 Transportation Co-Chair Marty Ingram, at the monthly meeting of Community Board 14, on Nov. 14. “But the loss of a single lane and left turn signals are going to cause massive traffic jams.”

Ingram explains that CB14 has been opposed to the plans since the beginning, because the route improvements would eliminate five existing bus stops at Beach 86th, 98th, 101st, and 105th streets, and West 5th Road in Broad Channel.

“Unfortunately, this is going to further isolate us,” Ingram said. “We’re already a transportation desert.”

But, before members of Community Board 14 could put it to a vote, DOT Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia requested that the board members hold off on making a formal decision until January, when both agencies will come back with more inclusive plans for the eastern end of Rockaway.

“We have not finalized how far east it will go,” Garcia said. “There is potential for expansion. The MTA is looking at that as well as a final list of bus stops that will be consolidated.”

According to Garcia, DOT representatives have not met with CB14 in more than a year-and-a-half. She said that when MTA and DOT return to CB14, in January, they will have a more inclusive set of plans that will take in consideration both ends of the peninsula.
