Congressman Gregory Meeks (right), seen here with outgoing Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, will not be present at the Oct. 17 debate in Rockaway, citing a previous commitment to support Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. On Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m., The Wave will host a “Debate Night” at Knights of Columbus, Rockaway Council No. 2672 at 333 Beach 90th St.

The Democrats will be represented by incumbent State Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., and Assembly candidate Stacey Pheffer Amato. The Republicans will be represented by Congressional candidate Michael O’Reilly, State Senate hopeful Michael Conigliaro, and Assembly candidate Alan Zwirn.

It is the first debate to be held in Rockaway since 2012, when Addabbo debated Ulrich at West End Temple.

Congressman Meeks says he will be unable to appear, citing a commitment to serve as a media surrogate for Hilary Clinton at next week’s presidential debate, and campaign there before and afterwards. His office hasn’t informed The Wave if he will be sending a representative in his place.

While those who attend the debate will not be able to ask questions from the floor, those who are interested in asking a question can email that question to editor@rockawave.com. Questions can also be submitted by mail to The Wave at 8808 Rockaway Beach Blvd; Rockaway Beach, NY 11693.

In order for questions to be considered, the following are required: full name, neighborhood and question.

The question you submit must be geared towards both candidates about improvements in public policy, quality of life and proposed legislation.

Remember, the same question must be asked of both candidates and the questions must reflect Rockaway issues.

The deadline to submit your questions is Oct. 18, in order to allow all interested residents to enter their questions.
