By Dan Guarino

Hazel Lewis of Broad Channel has turned 100. Hazel Lewis of Broad Channel has turned 100. On March 13 of this year, long time Broad Channel resident Hazel Lewis celebrated her 100th birthday. Her parents, Ethel Grace Largent and Stephen Joseph Sivyour, were born in 1884 and 1883 respectively.

She had a brother, Lester, who born in 1907 and a sister, Ethel, born in 1911. As the baby of the family, Hazel Virginia Sivyour came along in 1914.

In 1935 she married William James Lewis, and in 1936 welcomed a son, William James Jr.

Even after retiring from working with companies like Bobb- Merrill Publishing, Startex and Brooklyn Edison, Lewis didn’t stop doing. In the early 90’s she helped organize a bus in Broad Channel to bring seniors to shopping at Waldbaum’s in Rockaway.

She also volunteered time at the Broad Channel library, cleaning up outside, gardening and putting books on shelves.
