PS 47 in Broad Channel not only teaches students about reading, writing and math, but also gives lessons in how to lend a helping hand.

Recently the whole school collaborated with Family To Family, a national non-profit relief organization which connects families and communities with enough to share with American families in need.

Each month a different class collected and donated cans of food to help out.

Mrs. Ryan’s fourth grade class set themselves to the charitable task, collecting more cans than all of the other classes combined.

They got so involved they ended up taking a walking trip over the bridge to visit the food pantry at First Congregational Church in Rockaway Beach and meet the people who run it.

“It was an incredible experience for our students,” a PS 47 spokesperson said, “and we are super proud of their efforts!”
