Police put up white plastic sheets along the wire fence that runs under the elevated train on Rockaway Freeway to block the deceased from view.

According to the NYPD, the report first came in at 8 a.m. Contractors at the scene, who were doing work on the subway, noted seeing the man sprawled on the sidewalk and called police.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing an older, white male with gray-white hair, dressed in a dark blue, long sleeve shirt or jacket and dark trousers, lying face down on the pavement.

Responding officers advised that the man was unconscious and unresponsive, with severe head trauma. He was later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Transit personnel, police, crime scene investigators and personnel from the Medical Examiner’s office were on the scene well into the morning before the body was removed.

Police were reluctant to speculate on the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. As of Thursday morning, all questions, such as time and cause of death, were still pending an investigation by the Medical Examiner.
