The Fishing Report
Big Ron’s bait and tackle in Howard Beach informs us that blue fishing is still good and about the same as last week (fish are in the 10 pound range).
Ron said that the fluke fishing is steady with many “keepers” and even some fluke jumping up to the 5-6 pound range were taken. Ron said that he has plenty of bait on hand and hopefully the killies (live bait fish) will be in next week.
Jamaica Bay and outside:
Tom, at Tom’s Wave service station on Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park, tells us that the fluke fishing is very good with more “quality over quantity” of fluke being taken from Jamaica Bay. That means some really nice fish that are “keepers” instead of a lot of “shorts.”
We also hear from Tom that bunker are luring some striped bass off of the sea wall on Beach Channel Drive. He also gave us some good information about blue fish that are being taken off of the Coney Island flats. We also know of striped bass being caught by trolling the Rockaway Inlet.
East End Report: Beach 9th Street to Jones Inlet
Bernie Matzen took two nice fluke the other day and reported good fluke action between Long Beach High School and Point Lookout.
Bernie said that one of the fluke was chunky but, short at 17-3/4 inches (that fish was returned to the water. The other fluke was 19-1/2 inches and was a “legal” fish to keep.
Bernie said that he has heard reports of scattered blue fish in the area but, he hasn’t seen any, or taken any aboard. The fluke hit a spearing/squid combo. The other fluke was taken with a “Gulp” lure.
