Rockaway Outdoors

By Captain Vinnie Calabro

First bass for John, way to go! First bass for John, way to go! True to form as the weather started to heat up, so did the bay fishing.

Off this past moon, some noteworthy catches of striped bass throughout the bay were made, but unfortunately, with little consistency. Why is that?

Well it’s a combination of things; apparently the fish stocks are a bit off, plus the bay itself is still in a recovery mode, so to speak, from the aftermath of Sandy and a brutal winter. Hopefully, this will be corrected as time goes by.

Aboard the Jamaica Bay charter boat “Karen Ann,” Captain Frank grinded out this past week, putting together a catch most mornings, some bigger bass at that too. I guess being a Rockaway native and fishing the bay for 40 years accounts for something.

Fluke fishing seems to be coming along, and that should improve daily.

Bluefish also have made a comeback and it seemed at times bait couldn’t be in the water for more than five minutes.
