A residence that offers support services for individuals with mental illness in Rockaway Beach has finally made is comeback after Sandy.

Services for the UnderServed (SUS) and Enterprise Community Partners, Inc. are celebrating the reopening of a 71-unit affordable housing residence located at 318 Beach 85th Street on Friday, May 9. Sus’ Beach 85th Street residence was significantly damaged during Hurricane Sandy which left residents temporarily displaced and the property requiring extensive renovations. Beach 85th Street is one of the first housing developments with extensive damage from the storm to complete renovations. SUS is one of 12 organizations that participated in Enterprise’s Learning Collaborative for Housing Resilience, which helped local organizations impacted by Hurricane Sandy improve the resiliency of their affordable housing properties and safeguard them from future crises. SUS worked with Enterprise to assess and enhance its emergency response capacity to be prepared for future severe weather events, which included developing disaster preparedness and response plans, establishing a disaster response network, and addressing the physical vulnerabilities of the buildings in its portfolios.

The reopening of Beach 85th Street is being celebrated on Friday, May 9, during a ceremony starting at 10:30 a.m. The day will begin with tours of the residence until 11:30 a.m., followed by the program and a plaque and tree dedication.
