New Designs For Earth Day
Through an organic and evolving process, RWA, along with other community organizations including the Rockaway Youth Task Force (RYTF), came up with creative ideas for design projects which could serve the Rockaway community.
Working with architect, Alex Gilliam of Public Workshop, RWA’s young people, volunteers from RYTF and the community began construction on shade structures which could potentially be placed at different locations throughout the Rockaway peninsula. The design build took place over a two week period and the finished design was ready for all to see at the Earth Day celebration on Saturday, May 3, at Beach 59th St and Rockaway Beach Boulevard.
Rockaway Waterfront Alliance hosted a variety of organizations which engaged community members in fun, creative and educational activities, including kite making, plant giveaways and a Recycling Olympics and more.
This year's event will take place under the elevated A train line, to activate this space and promote Rockaway Waterfront Alliance’s newest project, Project Underway aimed at redesigning the A line underpass into a safer space for pedestrians and bikers, while creating more connectivity throughout the peninsula. Project Under Way has been funded by New York Community Trust, as a part of an initiative to improve transportation alternatives in the Rockaways.
