Battle Rock Muay Thai At BCHS

Joey Hernandez (R) Joey Hernandez (R) By Sandy Hackenmueller

When Battle Rock Muay Thai makes its debut on May 3 at Beach Channel High School in Rockaway Beach, it will be serving up two top contenders for a championship fight.

Muay Thai amateurs Joey Hernandez (11-4) and Greg Rowe (16-5) will be the night’s finale, which is sure to be fireworks. Both fighters hold a TBA Tournament Champion Title - Hernandez in 2012 and Rowe in 2013. Their Battle Rock face-off highlights New York’s firstever Thai Boxing Association sanctioned 154 pound title fight.

Hernandez lives in the Bronx and trains at Sitan Gym in Queens. He holds a winning 11-4 record and is fresh off of an April 4 win. Despite his busy schedule he was able to discuss his upcoming fight.

“That fight, along with the last four fights in 2013, has helped prepare me for this upcoming fight,” Hernandez said. “I’m always making adjustments for each bout. Every fight I come up with a new plan, and when I walk in the ring I’m never the same fighter from previous bouts.”

Greg Rowe (R) Greg Rowe (R) Hernandez has no predictions about how this fight will go. “Anything can happen in Muay Thai,” he said. “All I know about Rowe is that he’s a great and experienced fighter. The biggest challenge is handling the pressure of a championship bout, and the energy surrounding it.

“Both of us are top class athletes and are already entering our prime. My message to the fans is that this fight is a top contender for fight of the year!”

“I’m honored to fight on this promotion and thankful for being given the opportunity to fight for the TBA Title,” he continued. “I have to thank Eddie Marini, Aziz Nabih, Sean Hinds and Joel Estevez for making this possible and pushing me to take this fight.”

Hernandez hopes to leave his mark on the Muay Thai community and others as he continues his career. “I seek to inspire many people, especially all those who tend to doubt themselves in life, and show them they can do anything they want.” He hopes to go pro in 2014 and follow his dreams.

Hernandez has a message for his opponent, “Let’s make it Fight of The Year!”
