A Fallen Hero

It was a somber scene in Rockaway on Monday as thousands of uniformed police lined Rockaway Beach Boulevard to honor Police Office Dennis Guerra who gave his life in the line of duty last week in a fire in Coney Island allegedly caused by a “bored” teenager.

News reports of tragedies tend to desensitize us because they come from all over, so often. But the death of Officer Guerra, father of four, was painful and real, and struck home, indeed. Besides dying a hero’s death, he was a neighbor, husband, father, and friend to many people here in Rockaway. He lived in Rockaway, attended Beach Channel High School, and attended church here. And, he was, like so many residents, still facing Sandy related challenges when he made “the ultimate sacrifice for the people he served,” as Reverend Fulgencio Gutierrez said.

Words will do little to soothe the heartbreak of the family of Officer Guerra. pray and hope his wife, Cathy, and their four children find peace. We respectfully thank him for his service and
