It’s My Turn

Only in Rockaway...
By John Larkin

Do you ever hear people say “only in Rockaway?” Do you ever read a few threads on Facebook and see a discussion come to an end with “only in Rockaway?”

I thought about it and there are many things out here that seem to only happen in Rockaway. Only in Rockaway could the Neponsit Home be cleared out during the night to only end up sitting and rotting for the next 15 years. Only in Rockaway would the talk of utilizing that land to benefit the entire Rockaway community be like telling the emperor that he has no clothes on. I commend Senator Addabbo for bringing this issue to the forefront. It’s time this piece of land is used to benefit the entire Rockaway community. Change the covenant and let’s make something happen.

Only in Rockaway would two shells posing as buildings remain rotting eye sores on our most well-known perhaps historic block, Beach 116th Street. Do you think the theater and Lawrence would still be standing on Middle Village’s main shopping strip or in Forest Hills on Austin Street? Can we simply make our main beach block “beachy?” Can we recapture some of our former glory? How about something that works for us residents as well as our beach visitors? Applebees? Dave & Busters? Or a Joe’s Crab Shack?

This is our community. This is our home. It’s not Jersey, it’s not Williamsburg. We choose to live here and we wouldn’t want to be anywhere else... Only in Rockaway!
