Sand Pumping Begins

The wait for sand replenishment is over. Dan Falt of the Army Corps told The Wave on Thursday that the long-awaited dredge had arrived and that sand would start pumping at Beach 116th Street.

The second phase of the replenishment project, which will make the beach 10 feet higher and 100 feet deeper, will start at Beach 116th street and continue east to fill beaches all the way to Beach 81st Street. This should take about a month. Once that is complete, the pipes will be flipped and new sand will be poured from Beach 116th Street to Beach 149th Street. Beaches east of Beach 81st Street will have to wait for the piping plovers to leave before they get treated to new sand.
