Hammels Protected With 140 New Cameras

By Miriam Rosenberg

After years of delay, Hammel Houses now has 140 new eyes around the complex in the form of cameras for their increased safety.

One resident said about the cameras that went online approximately four or five weeks ago, “It has already made a difference.”

Councilman Donovan Richards and Senator James Sanders Jr. formally announced the new security system at a press conference on April 8.

“For too long residents have been held captive by the criminal element in this development,” Richards said. “Today we say no more.”

While Sanders was grateful for NYCHA finally getting the cameras up and running he wondered “How much crime we could have been stopped over those four years?”

The process began four years ago when Sanders, in his role as councilman, allocated $1 million for the cameras, but – for unknown reasons – NYCHA sat on the money.

Cameras are also scheduled to be installed in the Beach 41st Street Houses and the Ocean Bay Houses.
