Sarnoff Teaches Cartooning At RAA
“You haven’t seen anything until you’ve drawn it”, artist Robert Sarnoff says, as he shares examples of editorial cartoons, caricatures and comic strips his students created during Rockaway Artists Alliance’s recent four week class. The students explored contour drawing, contrast, cross-hatching, composition, caricatures and then they ran out of “c” words.
Sarnoff’s books “Cartoons Comics Ideas and Techniques” and “AFTER THE FALL 9/11/11 (A Decade @ War)” were used as references for the class.
A longtime resident Sarnoff, who is also a writer, illustrator and filmmaker, was awarded Art Educator of The Year from the UFT and NYCATA. He has taught painting and cartooning at Kingsborough College. He also pioneered a city wide art program for a NYC not-for-profit organization serving the needs of NYC’s homeless population.
Sarnoff’s works grace the collections of such celebrities as Eli Wallach, Oleg Cassini, Arthur Ashe, Cleavon Little, Bill Talbert, and appear on the Saatchi website and the immortalmarylin.com website (Marilyn Monroe).
Rockaway residents are familiar with his 2004 United States Postal Service “Ye Olde Jetty” matted print and cachet.
He is also an award winning filmmaker.
The four works shown here by Jessica Schulman and Susan Montague were created during the four week course.
