Community and Rockaway Waterfront Alliance volunteers gather after a good day’s planting, bringing beach grass to the dunes in Arverne. On Sunday April 6, the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance partnered with members of the Rockaway community in restoring the dunes by the shoreline in Arverne.

RWA partnered with more than 40 members of the community and planted 10,000 plus sprigs of beach grass. The purpose of the event was to create a natural barrier to protect against strong winds, storms and beach erosion.

The planting commenced on Beach 49th Street and the boardwalk and spread to Beach 50th, which caught the attention of many.

Whether it was the help of students from RWA’s own Shore Corps, PS 105, kids from Arts in Parts, community members of Arverne by the Sea or FEMA Corps volunteers, and members from all parts of the Rockaways participated.

This is not the first time Rockaway Waterfront Alliance has completed service of this type.

The gloves may be big, but the effort is bigger as everyone lends a hand. The gloves may be big, but the effort is bigger as everyone lends a hand. In 2013, RWA planted 15,000 plugs of native beach grass into the same area.

An RWA spokesperson noted that “Plantings like these are important to the community who were devastated by Storm Sandy, as dunes absorb the impact of storm surge and high waves, which can prevent and/or delay flooding of inland areas and property.”

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance looks to continue their mission to connect the community to the waterfront by planning more events similar to this in the future.
