NY Cares Seeks Rock Volunteers

New York Cares is looking for volunteers to make a make an impact in Rockaway!

They are looking for people to sign up for a variety of engaging projects at the Queens Public Libraries and other locations across the peninsula.

To sign up, those interested should go to www.newyorkcares.org and create an account, and then go to one of two information sessions.

The first will be at the Far Rockaway Library Branch, located at Mott and Central Avenues, on Tuesday, April 15 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The second session will be at the Seaside library on Wednesday, May 7, also from 5:30-6:30 p.m. The branch is located at 116-15 Rockaway Beach Boulevard.

NY Cares provided the following project descriptions:

“Civic Engagement (Far Rockaway)

Engage elementary school students in fun, hands on activities that will teach them the importance of civic engagement and service.

Theater Explorers (Arverne)

Cultivate the talent of future actors through a variety of improvisation games and theater exercises. The program will culminate with a short production.

Lego Robotics (Arverne)

Explore robotics with 5th and 6th grade students. Volunteers will work with small groups of students and use Lego Mindstorms sets to develop a moving robot that interacts with its environment. This project runs weekly for 10 sessions.

Art Explorers (Arverne)

Volunteers will engage participants in fun craft projects that are aimed to promote positive self-esteem, team building and communication skills.

Rebuilding (Rockaway-wide)

Assist with rebuilding homes or the West End Temple. This includes framing, drywall, painting, and more.

Intergenerational Arts and Crafts (Far Rockaway)

Encourage creativity with children and adults of all ages at a recreation center in Far Rockaway. Volunteers will engage participants in fun craft projects each month.

Assist at a Community Center (Arverne)

Help unload supplies, make care packages, sort and serve families and individuals in Rockaway.”
