Simon Says...
By Lew Simon, Democratic District Leader

Lew M. Simon Lew M. Simon We wish everyone a happy Passover and a joyous Easter. As I go around and talk to my friends, families and constituents many of you have said you miss my column, unfortunately it is now run every six weeks.

We were very proud to stand with our community last week in support of a permanent Rockaway ferry. Thanks to Mayor de Blasio for extending the ferry. It is vital for residents, community economic development and tourism that the ferry be permanent and affordable. Why is the Staten Island ferry free, while we have to pay?

Last Friday a group of us took a round trip on the ferry. What a beautiful ride and a wonderful time. We got to see the Parachute Jump and the new Freedom Tower. We urge everyone to keep utilizing our ferry.

Local 79 Mason Tenders Laborers Union is recruiting. You must be 18 years old with a high school diploma or GED, physically fit and able to lift 50 pounds and pass a drug test. Apply on April 17 at 9 a.m. at www.mttf.org. Do not be late as they are accepting 1000 applicants. Please do not call my office.

We are currently looking for registered Democrats to serve as Election Inspectors for the primary election in September and Election Day in November. You must live in the 23 A.D. Part B. The pay is $200 per day with an extra $100 for required training and $35 for working both days. Call my office.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Jacqueline Gates. I knew Jackie for over 30 years. Her kindness, love and smile lit up a room. She was a class act who spoke up for our Rockaway community. God must have needed a special angel in heaven, my deepest sympathy to the family.

We are very proud to have helped bring together NY Cares and the West End Temple. They came in to help rebuild the temple. They may be able to help any nonprofit organization that provides community service.

We are hoping that NYC Build it Back actually releases money to all those who filed and stop runarounds and shenanigans.

We need everyone to join forces from the east, west and middle of Rockaway for the things that we all need. We commend Felicia Johnson, a potential Assembly candidate in the 31 A.D., for standing up at various meetings to speak in favor of reopening the Rockaway line. In my opinion we can have the Rockaway line and a Queensway for biking and hiking.

The Department of Parks and Recreation has still not brought back the Rockaway Park handball and basketball courts destroyed by Sandy. They were heavily utilized all year. Let's be ready for a Memorial Day opening. Our disabled and elderly need the ramp at Beach 103rd Street for beach access. Parks caters to the tourists, but ignores some of our deserving local citizens.

I am available to assist you and your community group. Just call 718-945- 1216. Your membership dues ($25) for the Good Government Regular Democratic Club may be sent to the club c/o Beacon Rehab, 140 Beach 113th Street (same place, new name). We need your support.
