More than 650 boys and girls, playing on 54 teams in 10 divisions, will take to the fields to enjoy America’s pastime.
The regular season will run from April to mid-June and be followed by always exciting playoffs. Although Saturday is the first day of play, the official opening day ceremonies are scheduled for April 26th.
Longtime Little League President Marty Andresen said “We have great expectations for this coming season. It’s been a long winter but we’re looking forward to seeing all the boys and girls back on the diamond. The fields are ready and we’re excited to start our 61st year of Rockaway baseball. Good luck to all the teams.”
Andresen and other Little League officials say this season will continue the momentum from its successful 2013 campaign which saw the league and the community rebound from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Last season, with the help of many individuals and organizations, the league was able to put on a full schedule for 662 children and then sponsor a Welcome Back Celebration for the entire community at its facilities. Rockaway Little League opens the fields at Fort Tilden to start its 61st season this Saturday, April 5.
