Perfect Season For Mary Louis Academy
When the junior varsity girls’ basketball team of The Mary Louis Academy (TMLA) began their preseason practices, the team felt they could compete and set their goal of winning a championship. Those expectations were high but no one realized how special a basketball season these young ladies, including players from Rockaway, would have and what they would accomplish. The TMLA team would go undefeated, having a perfect season and record at 25 and 0. Throughout the season, the TMLA squad defeated some recognized high school basketball programs, some multiple times, in league and non-league competition, such as Christ the King, Archbishop Molloy, Nazareth, St. Anthony’s and Bishop Kellenberg.
The TMLA Hilltopper’s would win the CHSAA girls league finishing at 10 and 0, receiving a first round bye into the playoffs. After defeating St. Francis Prep in the semifinal, the girls captured the Brooklyn Queens Diocesan Championship defeating Archbishop Molloy in an exciting and well-played game.
The TMLA team would play their usual unselfish basketball and tenacious defense, defeating NDA, 65-50, capturing the City Championship. A great finish to a perfect season.
Two members from this special group of TMLA basketball players reside on the Rockaway peninsula in Belle Harbor.
Courtney McCool and Kaitlin Neiswenter, both former players from Saint Francis de Sales CYO program, were part of this championship team and are to be congratulated for this great achievement.
As the team supporters says, “Go Hilltoppers!!”
