A special visitor swooped into Rockaway on Saturday, March 15th, and caused quite a sensation.

As homeowner and photographer Ed Gormley described it, “A snowy owl landed on my roof on Beach 129 Street.”

“During the three and a half hours the owl stayed, scores of people crowded around my gate to observe this rare bird.”

Gormley noted that the New York area has had an influx of snowy owls this past winter due to a lack of food in their native habitats in the Arctic. This is he says the largest visitation of these owls to the area in 34 years.
