Gospel Concert At First Congregational Church
All are invited to a concert of The Swarthmore College Alumni Gospel Choir on Sunday, March 23rd, 4 p.m. The concert will take place at the First Congregational Church at 320 Beach 94th Street.
The Student Choir is 42 years old and the Alumni Choir is over 25 years old. While the Alumni members reside all over the country, they still travel to Swarthmore to rehearse and perform several times a year.
Led by singer Vaneese Thomas, Class of ’74, the Alumni Gospel Choir is known for its imaginative musical arrangements, talented musicians and singers, and the fervent still in which it performs its renditions of spirituals and contemporary gospel music. Another member of the choir is Associate Conference Minister Rev. Freeman Palmer
In 1996 the choir issued its first recording “Hallelujah! Amen!” This was followed in 2000 by “Stargazer,” a collection of holiday and Advent music. The net proceeds of the sales are used to fund scholarships.
The Alumni Gospel Choir has performed across the United States and abroad. In 2012, the choir was invited to perform in China and the Shanghai Normal University and the University of X’ian. This year the choir has been invited to give concerts in Budapest, Vienna and Prague.
Sunday’s concert is free and open to all.
