Free Trees This Spring

With spring finally here, tree season has begun! To celebrate and to continue its mission of planting one million new trees in New York City, MillionTreesNYC is giving away trees with local community groups, throughout the five boroughs, including locations in the area.

From March until May, 12,000 trees will be given to New Yorkers for them to plant in their yards, gardens or on commercial property. Those who apply for trees must agree to care for them by properly watering and maintaining them on their own property. The trees must not be planted along streets, in city parks, in containers, terraces, balconies or on roofs. Trees have many benefits including cleaner air, enhanced curb appeal, offset of climate change, cooler temperatures and more.

The Rockaway Waterfront Alliance held one of these tree giveaways on March 16th, but there is more coming to the area. The next area tree giveaway is being hosted by the Beach 116th Street Partnership at 264 Beach 116th Street on Sunday, March 30th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Habitat for Humanity will host one at 60 Market Street in Breezy Point on April 5th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The Rockaway Civic Association will host a giveaway at 533 Beach 126th Street on Sunday, April 6th from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Trees are available on a first-comefirst served basis, but there is a better chance of getting one if residents pre-register online at www.nyrp.org/ treegiveaways.
