Nearly a year and a half after Sandy knocked it out of commission, the Arverne Library reopened its doors to the community on Tuesday afternoon.

Last minute work was still being done just minutes before the 2 p.m. opening. But soon the computers in the adult section were almost filled, people were returning and taking out new materials and the arrival of young people from school was imminent.

There are only subtle differences from when the ribbon was cut at the library after the 2010 renovations but the 2014 version means everything is new, including computers, books, videos and other materials.

While the extensive repairs were going on, the library operated out of a trailer next to the building. The reopening prompted a resident to say, “It’s a good day.”
