Shore Corps Visits Brooklyn College
Last week students in the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Shore Corps Program visited with Professor Martin Schreibman, founder of the Aquatic Research Environmental Assessment Center (AREAC) at Brooklyn College.
Professor Schreibman took the students on a behind the scenes tour of his lab and discussed the work he has done in aquaponics.
The lab is operated by Brooklyn College students and offers them the opportunity to take part in projects related to sustainable agriculture, vermiculture and aquaculture on campus. The lab is teeming with tanks of tilapia that have been farm raised using aquaponics. Vegetables and other produce are grown in a rooftop greenhouse using the byproducts of the fish thereby completing the cycle.
The RWA students were excited to see the campus and learn more about the programs that are taking place at Brooklyn College. The Shore Corps Program introduces students to various colleges that are accessible to them and the programs they can take part in. Funding from Pinkerton Foundation has supported college prep work with the students this year.
