School Spotlight

On The Lookout For The Write Stuff

With all the recent emphasis on education— from the current call for Universal Pre-K on the city and state levels to the ever-present need for excellence in higher education—The Wave thought the time ripe to put the spotlight on Rockaway schools, especially on the various programs and accomplishments in the English and writing departments of those schools.

We are keeping an eye on the next generation of writers and journalists living among us, and area schools have much to take pride in. While it’s a cliché to say our children are our future, it’s nonetheless true. And students and educators are working together to secure that the written word will continue to play a prominent role in our classrooms.

What we are looking to do is simple, but also important to our community and how it perceives itself: We want to give students a professional platform on which to display their talents and opinions. All area schools are invited to submit articles by students—whether general prose or contributions to school newsletters or newspapers. They may be sent to this newspaper or emailed to: tuna.thomas@yahoo.com.

Of course, school news and releases of any kind are always welcome. We hope to make this new school news section into a continuing weekly fixture—starting with the next issue—that showcases what we know are some of the best schools in the city.

We look forward to hearing from you— our school leaders and educators—and working together to bring our schools to the forefront of our communities— where they belong.
