St. Francis Girls Make Diocesan Finals
St. Francis de Sales 5th Grade Girls A team defeated St. Margaret’s in the elite eight to advance to the Brooklyn/Queens Diocesan Semi- Finals.
The girls were led by Chloe Murphy's seven points, six from Lauren Dean and five from Brooke Leahy. Starting guards Nicole Moran and Kelly Erhard controlled the tempo of the game and off the bench Corinne Connelly, Caroline Gifford, Kaylie Walsh and Kiera Price led the charge on both ends of the court.
St. Francis will play on Saturday, February 22nd, at Bishop Kearney High School at 11 a.m. for a chance to advance to the championship game on Sunday the 23rd.
The St. Francis de Sales 5th Grade Girls B squad, also known as the "The Killer Bs", played a well-coached, physical and talented Blessed Trinity.
This was their third meeting this season, both teams winning one game each during the regular season with the margin of victory no greater than two points. The 2nd round playoff game for St Francis de Sales did not start out well.
Blessed Trinity jumped out to an early 4 to 0 lead in the first minute of the game. Coach Carlin then called for a time out to give his team a pep talk, to gain some composure and take a deep breath.
St. Francis went on to achieve an 8 to 0 run and maintained the lead from that moment on. The high scorers were Victoria Mullen and Maeve Murnan; Megan Murray did a superb job in assisting from the foul line. The defensive end which included Kaitlin Keane, Sophia Keeler, Emma Murray, Jen Quagliariello, Hagan Carlin and Lauren Mitterway assisted in the 15 to 12 nail biting victory. Next game is the Final Four at Monsignor McClancy Memorial High School on February 22nd at 2:15 p.m.
As the playoffs reach their conclusion the action at St. Francis de Sales gym will just begin to start as teams from Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and Long Island will compete in the 19th annual Peggy Boyle tournament.
Games start on Saturday, February 22nd, at noon and Sunday the 23rd at 1 p.m.
Games played throughout March lead to the championships on Sunday, March 30th. The girls missed out on this opportunity last year due to the storm and are anxious to begin this annual post season tournament.
The school invites everyone to come out and support the St. Francis de Sales CYO basketball program.
