Spikeboarding Inventor Speaks

Enrique ‘Cubi’ Cubillo demonstrates spikeboarding. Enrique ‘Cubi’ Cubillo demonstrates spikeboarding. Enrique Cubillo, inventor of Spikeboarding and the Cubicross, recently came to speak with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance Shore Corps students about the new transit sport he has designed.

“Cubi,” as he is known in the skateworld, presents a striking sight as a ‘spikeboarder,’ looking a bike racer but flying by on a longboard with a 10’ spike in hand.

After a career on the pro bike circuit, Cubi decided to try combining longboarding with rollerskiing to create a full body “transit” sport called spikeboarding. By using both legs to push off of a longboard he gains more endurance and speed and then created a long spike for balance and push off for uphill climbs. The sport has allowed him to not only get a great workout but travel without delay through city streets. He has been a big advocate for transportation alternatives and continues to spread word of this exciting sport in hopes of it someday being a competitive sport in future Olympics.

The students have been working on finding ways to improve transportation in the Rockaways through transit planning. But learning about spikeboarding offered them the opportunity to think about the many sports and transportation alternatives there are.
