Seniors Celebrate Valentine’s Day with JASA
Seniors attended the annual Sweethearts Ball at the JASA Roy Reuther Senior Center at 711 Seagirt Avenue to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14th. Many got into the holiday spirit by dressing in red. The JASA staff also helped heighten the mood for attendees by decorating the center with red and pink balloons, red cups and heart table cloths and red sprinkles on pink-iced donuts.
Seniors danced their way towards lunch with music provided by DJ Angela. Prizes were given out for best costumes and spirit.
On Wednesday, February 12th, more than 100 seniors gathered at JASA Housing at Brookdale Village in Far Rockaway for a Valentine’s Day celebration event where they enjoyed live music, dancing, couple’s games and sharing their experiences and advice on how to make a marriage last for decades. Couples who attended ranged from being married 10 years to 45 years and competed in marriage games for romantic gifts.
Even after being married for 40 years, these two keep the love alive by taking arts and crafts classes, computer classes and ESL lessons together in their efforts to share experiences as they have always done, despite both needing walkers now. They spoke about how love evolves over the years and ideas for romantic gestures for couples of all ages.
For example, the husband leaves loving post-it notes for his wife to remind her to take a pill or schedule a doctor’s appointment, always with a sweet note at the end.
