Get Money Out Of Politics
I’m tired of being ashamed of the campaign system in our country by which only millionaires can get a chance to serve their country. This affects us locally also here in Rockaway as only favored sons and daughters of the parties can get support for our local needs. I am thrilled that maybe some progress is being made on this front of campaign finance reform.
This is not a partisan comment on my part. By the time the bill was introduced, it had 130 original co-sponsors -- more than any other campaign finance reform bill in recent history! I'm proud to say that our local rep, Meeks, was one of the co-sponsors. Thank God it had some sign of support from both wings of the political establishment.
This is a start but we ain’t done yet! In order to win on any issue, whether reforming Wall Street, defending the middle class, or saving the beach for our grandkids, we need to break the influence of big-money in our democracy.
It makes sense to limit the amount that can be donated to any politician. This will save us hundreds of billions in “almost legal” favors that are exchanged because of lack of control over donations that results from politicians sucking up to big-money donors. How much did we lose by the vertical decision to put the spaceship toilets on our beach?
I'm proud of Representative Meeks for taking a stand against big-money interests in favor of everyday voters. Please don’t insult my intelligence by responding that this is a partisan endorsement. It comes from a lifelong Rockawayite and patriot who wants the biggest bang for my tax buck.
