Take the Rockaway Volunteer Challenge!

It’s time to get active in the community. New York Cares is holding a Rockaway Volunteer Challenge by allowing people to participate in various events across the peninsula.

New York Cares is calling for people to sign up for five or 10 volunteer projects on the peninsula until May 1st. Those who complete the projects are eligible for certain prizes. Those who complete five projects will receive a $15 MetroCard or Dunkin Donuts gift card. Those who complete 10 projects can receive a $20 MetroCard or Dunkin Donuts gift card, a volunteer service certificate, and the chance to win a raffle prize.

Among some of the available projects are rebuilding the Bethel AME Church Food Pantry, rebuilding homes with Friends of Rockaway, encouraging creativity with 1st and 2nd grade children through the Art Explorers program at Goldie Maple Academy and assisting the Action Center in Rockaway by unloading supplies, making care packages and serving families and individuals in Rockaway who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Some of the projects have pick-ups in Manhattan, but locals can arrange for their own travel to local project sites. For more information about the projects and to register, go to www.newyorkcares.org/projects /rockaway-volunteer-challenge.
