Somewhere In Rockaway

The road through Rockaway sometimes runs straight through the past.

Recently sharing this vintage family photograph, Rockaway resident and artist Renee Radenberg noted, “This is a picture of my great-grandfather’s gas station in Rockaway.”

Not only could you fill up your tank, you could also fill up with a refreshing orange drink for 5 cents and a roasted hot dog for 10 at the small stand at right.

“His name was Henry Altman,” Radenberg said about her grandfather. “I do not know where the gas station was. All I know that it was in the Rockaways in the 1920s. It would be great to find out where it was.”

Anyone who might know its long ago location can e-mail dan@rockawave.com.
