Icing On The Cake
Betty Bonta had no intentions of slowing down as her 80th birthday approached on Sunday, January 26th. The executive director of Rockaway Manor Home Care checked off another item on her bucket list — she drove the Zamboni at the Long Beach Ice Arena.
“I knew nothing about hockey until my grandson, Gerrin, started playing in the Long Beach recreation program. After seeing the Zamboni smooth the ice, I decided I wanted to drive it,” Bonta said.
The Far Rockaway resident was joined by dozens of family members, friends, and current and former colleagues for an afternoon of ice skating before taking center stage, steering the Zamboni onto the ice. Bonta then circled around the rink, waving and smiling broadly at cheering onlookers.
“It was so much fun,” she exclaimed afterward. “And I think one of the best things about this is that I’m getting to see so many significant people from different points in my life.”
