Locals Shine On St. Edmund
The St. Edmund Prep High School varsity ice hockey team entered the second half of their season tied for first place with Xavier High School in the Catholic High School Hockey League (CHSHL). Both teams shared impressive identical 8-1 records.
The Eagles from St. Edmund Prep have relied on the solid play of several local players. Breezy Point’s Tom Rom has been one of the leading scorers for the Eagles this season. The senior was named an assistant captain for the boys from Brooklyn. His leadership, both on and off the ice, has been contagious and is catching on with the rest of the team.
One of Rom’s linemates, Cullen Lonborg, has become an integral member of the Eagles this year. Cullen is a junior from Broad Channel and his elevated play has helped make the team much deeper. Breezy Pointer Ryan Smith has been a spark plug every time he gets on the ice. The junior has drawn several power plays for the Eagles with his tenacious play.
On the blue line, the Eagles are manned by Jim Carney. The defenseman from Howard Beach has been playing the lion’s share of time for St. Edmund Prep. Carney is a senior and an assistant captain. He plays on the power play and penalty kill units and is on the ice at almost all crucial times.
Goalkeeper Justin Carricato has been outstanding for St. Edmund Prep all year. The freshman from Broad Channel has been unbeatable between the pipes all year.
St. Edmund Prep’s next home game is on Monday February 3rd. They will take on Poly Prep in a non-league matchup at Abe Stark arena in Coney Island. The game starts at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles next league game is on February 5th at Flushing Meadow Park when they take on the Terriers from St. Francis Prep.
