App Promotes Reading at St. Camillus

Saint Camillus first grader, Tyler Williams, 6, made his parents proud when he came home with an award certificate for reading 88 books.

Through an online reading app called Raz-kids, introduced by Tyler’s teacher, Ms. Geary, first graders are able to read short books on iPads or other tablets. The app includes quizzes at the end of the book and the student is given a score for each book read. “My son can’t seem to stop reading and I don’t try to stop him,” Tyler’s father, Edwin Williams said. “I highly recommend this app for parents to help with reading. We are constantly hearing about failing schools, horrible teachers and students who are not doing well. It is time to shine the light on teachers that go above and beyond and students who reach for the stars. Our school system in NYC really needs help and I hope that our new Mayor and schools Chancellor can turn the ship around and steer our kids in the right direction. This is our future and we have to invest in the children and lift them all up so that we all succeed.”
