A Disturbing Vote

Dear Editor:

It is disturbing for me to see that the City Council members voted for Melissa Mark-Viverito as the new City Council Speaker. Ms. Viverito refuses to say the Pledge of Allegiance. In fact, it has been reported that she sits while other members stand and hold their hands over their heart and say the Pledge of Allegiance. When questioned recently as to why she doesn't say the Pledge of Allegiance her spokesperson responded that she was born in Puerto Rico and was unfamiliar with the tradition. I truly hope he doesn't think that we believe that. After all, Ms. Viverito has been here in the United States since she is 18 years old. She came here for her education. She is now working in the NYC Government.

City Councilman Eric Ulrich originally said, "If you take an oath of office to serve the public in this country, then you should have no problems pledging allegiance to its flag." I admired the councilman for that statement. Unfortunately, after a meeting with Viverito and calls from Mayor de Blasio our councilman did an aboutface and decided to vote for Viverito.

I don't understand how any of our city council members could vote for a woman who doesn't stand proudly and say The Pledge of Allegiance! Our flag is a powerful symbol of America. Millions of men and woman fight for what it stands for and millions have died for it.
