Disney Dazzling at Rockaway Theatre
Members of the Rockaway Theatre Company’s Children’s and Teens’ Theatre Workshops are joining together to present a brilliant and extravagant new production of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” at the RTC Post Theatre at Fort Tilden.
Both workshops have been meeting weekly since September to prepare for the big show which opens this Friday night, January 24th, at 7 p.m.
More than 68 students have studied all aspects of musical theater including acting, dance, music, scenery and costuming with RTC professional instructors to prepare them for this theatrical production. “The results,” an RTC spokesperson said, “are a show that theatergoers won’t want to miss.”
RTC’s Young People’s Theater Workshops were originally founded in 2003 by RTC board members Peggy Page and the late Peggy Vivino. What began as a small theater acting workshop for a limited group of youngsters has blossomed, over the past 10 years, into one of the most successful musical theatre workshops throughout the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens.
Peggy Page continues to administer the program with the assistance of a dedicated team of theatrical experts. This year’s team includes directors Frank Caiati and Susan Corning, music directors Richard Louis Pierre and Jodee Timpone, choreographer Gabrielle Mangano, costumiers Kerry O’ Connor and Matthew Smilardi, stage manager Suzanne Riggs and set construction director Tony Homsey.
Even with all the very professional adult assistance, the highlight of the RTC Children’s Program has always been the children themselves. This year is no exception to that rule.
“The Little Mermaid Jr.” boasts two complete alternating casts of talented young people ranging in age from 5 to 18 years of age.
The ‘Blue Cast’ will open the run and will take to the stage on January 24th, 25th and 31st at 7 pm. They will also perform at the 2 p.m. matinee show on Saturday, February 1st.
The multitalented members of the ‘Green Cast’ will take the stage for the majority of the matinee performances including January 25th and 26th and February 2nd at 2 p.m. They will also do the 7 p.m. evening performance on February 1st.
Theatergoers definitely may want to come twice to see both casts. They’ll want to get their tickets soon though. RTC advises most performances are already sold-out, but there are some good seats still available for this Saturday’s, January 25th, performances.
All seats are an amazing bargain at only $10. Call the RTC hotline, 718- 374-6400 or visit www.rockaway theatrecompany.org to reserve seats before they’re gone.
As RTC says, “These fresh young performers give a truly swimming performance. From flounder to flotsam they will take audiences on a fantastic undersea foray that will leave the whole family flabbergasted. Don’t miss it!”
