Slice Of Life

And The Winner Is…
by Beth Hanning

Awards season. I try to explain to my husband that it is my Super Bowl season. I love films, television and celebrities. My husband reads “Sports Illustrated” before his major sporting events and I read “Entertainment Weekly.” As soon as the holidays are over and all films have been released the debate begins: Who will be nominated? Who will be snubbed? I read all the articles and study the odds.

My favorite awards show is The Golden Globes. It is my favorite for a few reasons. 1. It has both television and films in one show and 2. The actors and actresses sit at banquet tables and eat and drink during the show. I feel this is the only show where they act like normal people. Even before last week’s show, most commentators were discussing the antics of past Golden Globes shows: Christine Lahti not hearing her name announced when she won because she was in the bathroom. (If she was sober she never would have been in the restroom with her category approaching!)

This year I was not let down when “Saving Mr. Banks” Emma Thompson strutted onto the stage to present the award for best screenplay with a martini in her hand and her Christian Louboutin red-soled shoes in the other

hand. She then threw her shoes over her shoulder and asked Miss Golden Globe to hold her drink while she opened the enveloped to reveal the winner. Now this lady knows how to have fun. If I was going to be on television announcing a major category I probably would wait until after I presented to have my first drink.

However, even though I am a film and television junkie, and I love to see who wins and loses, I have to admit I also watch the awards shows to see what everyone is wearing. I get very comfortable on the couch and watch the red carpet pre-show. I feel I could critique the outfits just as well as Joan Rivers. The thing I have become obsessed with over the last few years is what their diet and exercise could consist of to stay as thin as many of the actresses are. As each actress gets interviewed, I cannot even hear what their responses are because I am obsessing over when is the last time they ate.

As I am writing this column I have just received an email that the Seastreak Ferry has been extended again! Keep riding the ferry everyone. We need to make it a permanent addition to our community. Have a great week everyone.
