BCAC Says Thank You In A Big Way
The Broad Channel Athletic Club took the opportunity on Saturday, January 11th, to thank the many individuals and organizations who lent a hand to their island community.
More than 150 people attended the event held at the American Legion Hall in Broad Channel.
Guests enjoyed music, food, beverages and good company amid the white and green streamers and balloons, the BCAC’s teams’ colors.
BCAC President Jim Mangan acknowledged the groups who pitched in and helped after the storm.
These included the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Prince- Wynn Post, the Broad Channel Volunteer Fire Department, the BC Civic Association, Ka-Boom, Sports Angels and many more.
He also noted how many of those have since joined together to reach out to disaster struck communities in Oklahoma, Colorado and elsewhere.
Goldfeder, recounting what he saw in Broad Channel in the days after the hurricane, noted, “It’s not about areas. It’s about community.”
“This town was the epitome of neighbors helping neighbors, friends helping friends, strangers helping strangers.”
Another speaker, quoting Bishop Fulton Sheen, said, it was an example of “Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.”
Speaking on behalf of Sports Angels, a non-profit group which replaced all of the equipment BCAC kids lost during the storm, Sister Barbara offered a well-received “Ten Rules of Good Sportsmanship.”
