Local entrepreneurs Steve and Christian Stathis of Boarders are at it again. Word on the street is that they are in the process of building an indoor golf facility with state of the art technology that will bring the world’s best golf courses to Rockaway. The club will feature a bar for drinking between rounds of golf, or as Rockaway patrons might view it, playing some golf in between rounds of beer. Either way, it should be a welcome addition to Rockaway’s sports and entertainment scene. Good luck guys and keep us posted!
Matt Whalen has done it again and come up with an idea that is both practical and pays homage to local aviation history. How about designing some of the new benches that will line our new boardwalk with solar powered cell phone and tablet charging stations? This will allow people to charge up their portable devices while they relax and get recharged themselves. Solar panels would be integrated into the top of airplane wing shade structure above the bench. Aircraft aluminum and wood would be the dominant materials. Thanks Matt!
Speaking of benches, I’ve got an indoor rowing machine that mocks me as I sit comfortably on the couch. I know I should use it more but I am just so damn lazy. Eventually the guilt gets to me and I’ll do 10 minutes or about 2,000 meters of rowing a few times a week. Once I get started it feels good and I wonder why I don’t do it more often. Still, it is boring and I needed to do something to keep me busy so the 10 minutes didn’t seem like an hour.
I tried watching TV but the sound always got drowned out by the noisy erg, and besides, the TV is way off to the side, which wasn’t ideal. So eventually I started listening to podcasts through ear buds connected to my smart phone. This allowed me to listen to some interesting stuff that made the time fly. Problem solved!
Here are some of the podcasts that currently live on my phone… Slate’s Political Gabfest, Formula- Pod, PRI Science and Creativity, BrainStuff, Entrepreneur on Fire, Motley Fool Money, Autoblog, NPR CarTalk, F1 Weekly, CarCast, TEDTalks, and WTF. This American Life, The Moth, Studio360, HBR IdeaCast, This is Your Life with Michael Hyatt, Seth Godin’s Startup School, 60 Second Mine, StarTalk Radio, Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders and last but not least, Ideas Wanted Podcast.
Usually it’s a crap shoot as to whether the episode I choose will be interesting or not. Even though I will only be listening for 10 minutes, the duration of my torture, it is still a commitment since my hands are on the handle and I’m sliding back and forth. Changing channels at that point is simply not an option.
Anyway yesterday morning I randomly chose Podcast #346 on HBR (Harvard Business Review) IdeaCast entitled “The Truth about Creative Teams.” The gist was that distrust among team members can lead to more out-of-the-box thinking. Further, research indicates that conflict and open criticism of other’s ideas (cognitive conflict) actually increases creativity. Bottom line, if we’re too “nice,” we are not being honest and bad ideas will not die the early death they deserve.
