RWA Tours NYC Bike Share
In the absence of a continuous boardwalk, RWA’s Shore Corps interns have been engaging in a variety of cyclist and pedestrian access projects. Recently their efforts were encouraged by a behind-the-scenes tour with the Biking Public Project Advisory Board of the NYC Bike Share warehouse in Sunset Park.
Emilia Crotty, NYC Bike Share Education and Outreach Manager, greeted the group at the warehouse and rode them through a day in the life of Citi Bike, pedaling through different types of bike share systems, operations, potential applications and common challenges.
Then everyone got to ride! For many of the Rockaway highschoolers, it was their first time on a Citi Bike. Crotty led the interns on a brief cruise around the block and down to the water for an amazing view out onto the bay, before a group photograph.
The Shore Corps interns have been working closely with Helen Ho, an experienced bicycle advocate and community organizer, toward a smoother and safer ride for all current and would-be cyclists in the Rockaways.
RWA offered special thanks to Ho for making the Citi Bike trip possible.
Next, she and the Shore Corps interns will prepare to present their work at the Youth Bike Summit in New York this February.
Blaze Jones-Yellin, RWA Program Manager, says RWA is planning to host multiple bicycle-based events this summer, including the annual Bike Parade and Bike Bonanza, and encourages the community to check their website www.rwalliance.org periodically for details and updates.
