Photos by Miriam Rosenberg Ninety workers from West Lawrence Care Center on Seagirt Boulevard in Far Rockaway held an informational rally in front of the nursing home earlier this week in advance of what could be a oneday strike on December 12th. Workers say they’ve been without a contract since September 30th.

Similar rallies were held at 41 nursing homes in Nassau and Far Rockaway including New Haven Manor.

Union organizer Linda Pizzi explained the issues at Wednesday’s rally. “Management wants to take away benefits and some pension.” Pizzi added that another concern is quality care for the residents.

“They are cutting staff on all floors,” said Pizzi. “Our major issue is staff levels and how much [management] expects us to do and take care of on each floor.”

Drivers honked their horns in support of the protesters. Drivers honked their horns in support of the protesters. Said one picketer “We tried our best to negotiate. We are at the table. They don’t want to negotiate with us.”

Another said, “All we want is our contract.”

If the informational rally is not successful, Pizzi said they are prepared to hold a one-day strike in all 42 nursing homes on Thursday, December 12th.

The Wave called West Lawrence Care Center but received a “no comment,” from the administration.
