Free Smoke Detectors for Sandy Seniors

The FDNY is providing free smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to Sandy-impacted seniors. Those 62 and older and those with hearing impairments can have a free detector, which will last for 10 years, installed in their home. The entire visit and installation lasts about 15 minutes and includes a fire safety inspection. Call 718-281-3872 or email Christopher. Hogan@fedny.ncy.gov to make an appointment.

The department has about 2,000 detectors that will be installed in the Sandy-impacted areas in Brooklyn, Staten Island and Queens, including Rockaway. The program is open to seniors as they are more vulnerable to fires. Of the 58 deaths due to fires in 2012, 43 percent of those were aged 70 or older.
