Free Flea Market To Host Thanksgiving Dinner
The Rockaway Free Flea Market and thePS 183 Parent Association are hosting a community Thanksgiving dinner.
The Rockaway Free Flea Market ladies, who have been helping the community since Sandy, wanted to hold a Thanksgiving dinner for residents. Having held Thanksgiving dinners in the past, thePS 183 Parent Association reached out to the women and offered the school as a space at which to hold the dinner. The dinner will take place at PS 183 at 245 Beach 79th Street from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26th..
Among those serving will be elected officials including Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder, Councilman Donovan Richards, Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr., and Democratic district Leader Lew Simon, as well as 100th Precinct Community and Council President Danny Ruscillo.
The food is being provided by members of the community and various groups. “Almost every tray of food is donated from local people, paying it forward,” Marissa Bernowitz of the Rockaway Free Flea Market said.
There will be stuffing, mashed potatoes, yams, cranberry sauce, green beans, broccoli, other veggies, ham, and of course, turkey. The Community Affairs Bureau has donated several turkeys, some of which will be cooked and some of which include uncooked turkeys that will be given away in a raffle.
“This event is for anybody. If you’re hungry, you can come. This isn’t about Sandy,” Bernowitz said. “People shouldn’t have to worry about not being able to feed their families for Thanksgiving.”
All who attend will be given a free raffle ticket for gift baskets containing food items, gift cards and more. Winners do not need to be present when the raffles are drawn as phone numbers will be written on the tickets. “We’re expecting anybody from anywhere to come out. We hope we have a really good turnout,” Bernowitz said.
