St. Francis: Unbreakable
Communities across New York and New Jersey marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy on October 29th, 2013. The St. Francis de Sales school community held a “Stronger than the Storm” day. Students and staff showed off their unbreakable and unstoppable spirit by wearing t-shirts to mark the day that Sandy came crashing onto our shores. Two eighth grade students designed the t-shirts.
Students in the primary grades had a rededication ceremony of the playground. Then the entire school community including parents held a prayer service to give thanks for the countless volunteers and donations the school received after the storm. The 1st grade class performed a moving tribute for the people, who were our angels after the storm all the first responders, volunteers and sanitation crews. However, the highlight of the service was when teachers, parents, priests, and students all sang the song “Home” by Phil Philips.
Immediately following the prayer service students were treated to a barbecue and a party in the gym with a DJ. It was a day to reflect on where we were one year ago and the journey we all took to get where we are today. It was a day to celebrate our strength and resilience. The SFDS school community continues to pray for all the students who are still not home. We have proven that our school is unbreakable and unstoppable!
