The Fishing Report

Jamaica Bay: Ron at Big Ron’s Fishing Station in Howard Beach reports that the blackfish are biting and available. Blackfish sizes are “sketchy” with both large and small fish mixed in.

Porgies are still active on the reefs outside but, there is still some limited action hanging on just off of Floyd Bennett Field.

Ron also reports that there are some bluefish around. Diamond Jigs are now getting the bluefish’s attention as anglers are switching over to metal lures and “Bouncing Tin.”

Ron said that AVA Diamond Jigs #27, #37 and #47 are the most popular sizes being sold right now. Ron also said that Captain Mike reported taking home some bass as well.

Jamaica Bay and the Beaches: Tom’s Wave Service Station on Beach Channel Drive in Rockaway Park reports that there is finally some striped bass action in the surf, the bass are on the smaller side but, we do have striped bass in the surf now. Tom reports that the bass are striking the Diamond Jig AVA-17 (tail color does not matter). Tom also reports that there are blackfish in the area.

Way East End report: Bernie Matzen and Eric Albreck were in Montauk this week catching some bluefish on the charter boat “Lazy Bones.”

Bernie and Eric had hopes on taking home some striped bass but, they reluctantly took some bluefish home instead. The bluefish were landed using AVA Diamond Jigs.

Bernie said that the striped bass seem to be leaving the Montauk area and are migrating westward along the surf line. This report comes courtesy of Matt Whalen
