Residents Remember Sandy With Candlelight Vigil

Dozens of residents gathered at the beach on the first anniversary of Hurricane Sandy to reflect and pay respect to the lives lost during the storm with a candlelight vigil.

John Cori and Eddy Pastore of Friends of Rockaway Beach, as well as other community members, organized the spontaneous commemorative event. Residents gathered around a bonfire on Beach 92nd Street at 7 p.m. Some brought candles, but with beach winds making lighting difficult, others relied on flashlights and candle applications on cell phones.

The residents were joined by mayoral candidate Joe Lhota. He also attended a memorial Mass at St. Mary Star of the Sea earlier in the day. Photos by Rita Tortorelli
